The Hidden Hazard in the Workshop: Silica Exposure from Jeweller's Rouge and Polishing Compounds

For generations, jewellers have perfected their craft using polishing compounds that bring precious metals to a brilliant mirror finish. Among the most well-known is jeweller's rouge, a staple in workshops around the world. While the focus is often on achieving exceptional results, there is a workplace hazard that deserves equal attention: airborne dust. 

Many polishing compounds—including some formulations of jeweller's rouge and other abrasive polishing products—often contain crystalline silica or other fine mineral particles. When these materials become airborne during polishing, buffing, mixing, or cleaning, they can be inhaled deep into the lungs. Over time, repeated exposure can have serious health consequences. 

 

Understanding Silica 

Crystalline silica is a naturally occurring mineral found in materials such as quartz, sand, and many industrial minerals. It has long been recognized as an occupational health hazard when fine particles are inhaled. 

The danger comes not from touching silica but from breathing respirable dust—particles so small they can travel deep into the lungs where the body struggles to remove them. 

 

How Exposure Occurs in a Jewellery Workshop 

Jewellers may unknowingly create airborne dust during routine tasks, including: 

  • Polishing with buffing wheels. 
  • Using dry polishing compounds. 
  • Cleaning polishing mops. 
  • Sweeping dried polishing residue. 
  • Emptying dust collection systems. 
  • Mixing or handling powdered polishing compounds. 

These activities can release microscopic particles that remain suspended in the air long after visible dust has settled. 

 

Health Risks of Long-Term Exposure 

Repeated inhalation of respirable crystalline silica has been linked to several serious diseases, including: 

  • Silicosis – a permanent and progressive lung disease caused by silica particles becoming trapped in lung tissue. 
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). 
  • Lung cancer – occupational exposure to respirable crystalline silica is recognized as a cause of lung cancer. 
  • Kidney disease. 
  • Increased risk of certain autoimmune disorders. 

These illnesses often develop slowly over many years, meaning workers may not realize damage is occurring until symptoms become significant. 

 

Is All Jeweller's Rouge the Same? 

No. 

Traditional jeweller's rouge is primarily iron oxide, which does not present the same silica hazard. However, not all polishing compounds marketed to jewellers are identical. Some polishing compounds, cutting compounds, abrasive pastes, or mineral-based polishing products may contain crystalline silica or other respirable mineral abrasives. 

For this reason, it is essential not to assume a product is safe based solely on its trade name or appearance. 

The best source of information is the manufacturer's Safety Data Sheet (SDS), which identifies hazardous ingredients and recommended handling procedures. 

 

Reducing the Risk 

Fortunately, there are practical ways to significantly reduce dust exposure. 

Use Effective Dust Extraction 

Local exhaust ventilation positioned close to polishing wheels captures airborne particles before they reach the breathing zone. 

Avoid Dry Sweeping 

Instead of sweeping, use: 

  • HEPA-filter vacuum cleaners. 
  • Wet cleaning methods. 

These approaches greatly reduce the amount of dust released back into the air. 

Wear Appropriate Respiratory Protection 

Where engineering controls cannot eliminate exposure, a properly fitted respirator suitable for fine particulates may provide additional protection. Respirators should complement—not replace—effective ventilation. 

Maintain Equipment 

Regularly clean extraction systems, replace filters as recommended, and inspect polishing equipment to ensure it continues operating efficiently. 

Read the Safety Data Sheet 

Every polishing compound used in the workshop should have an accompanying SDS. It provides valuable information about ingredients, exposure risks, and recommended protective measures.
